Adverse and Positive Childhood Experiences in Connecticut

Data To Action Platform

About This Data Platform

The PACE Data Platform is an interactive source for Adverse and Positive Childhood Experiences (ACEs and PCEs) data in Connecticut. The goal of the PACE Platform is to provide ongoing, short-term, systematic ACE and PCE data that can be used by public health personnel, government leaders, and the public to inform health policies and prevention strategies directed to children and youth.

ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood that may increase the risk for mental health problems, chronic illnesses, health-risk behaviors, and adverse social outcomes later in life, while PCEs are factors that have been found to promote healthy child development and well-being. These factors can also buffer against the effects of ACEs.

The underlying mechanism connecting ACEs and negative health outcomes is the toxic stress resulting from prolonged or extreme exposure to abuse and other challenges at home or in the community. In Connecticut, we are interested in preventing ACEs and promoting factors that can protect against adverse health outcomes.

Data Sources

Data sources used on this platform are classified as the youth report, the parent report, and more timely data sources (service-seeking data). The youth report is based on data from the Youth Risk Behavioral Survey (YRBS), known in Connecticut as the CT School Health Survey (CSHS). The parent report is based on National Survey on Children’s Health (NSCH). Both the youth report and parent report are broken out by ACEs and PCEs. The timely data is based on the number of calls made to 211 by individuals seeking information about services.

About Us

The PACE Platform was developed by the Connecticut Data Collaborative in partnership with the Department of Public Health Sciences and the Center for Prevention Evaluation and Statistics (CPES) at UConn Health. Dr. Mayte Restrepo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, provided the vision and data knowledge for the design of the PACE Portal. CPES provided data analysis and dissemination expertise. The Connecticut Data Collaborative provided interactive data visualization and technical expertise in the development of the PACE Platform. The Adverse Childhood Experiences subcommittee of the State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup served as an advisory group for the PACE surveillance work.

The PACE Platform was developed with the financial support of the Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences: Data to Action (PACE: D2A) grant funded by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2020 to 2023. The Connecticut Office of Early Childhood (OEC) acted as the Principal Investigator.
