Most Common Race or Ethnicity by Census Tract

When looking at census data for Connecticut, the state-level population data can hide the diversity that lies within our state. The Census Bureau analyzed the national data by county to uncover the racial and ethnic diversity that lies underneath the top-line stats about which racial or ethnic identity is most common. We wondered what Connecticut looks like when we explore the second and third most common racial and ethnic identity by census tract.

In this analysis, CTData looked at the 2020 Census population and calculated the race with the highest prevalence, second highest prevalence, and third highest for each of the 883 census tracts in CT. Below are three maps displaying this information. As the maps show, while the Connecticut population became more diverse since the last census, the white race is the most common race in most census tracts. However, there are census tracts that are majority black and Hispanic in and around major cities in the state with more census tracts as a majority Hispanic than other races besides white. As we look at the second and third most common race and ethnicities, we see the diversity that lies within our state.
